Homemade Dog Treats
I have been seeing so many recipes on pinterest lately for homemade dog treats, and I thought I would give it a go. I think they turned out great - seriously - my mom and I taste tested them, and they were good. Moochie (the dog) approved too :) I feel like while technically a dog treat, these would also work great as teething cookies for kiddos as well, nothing here a human can't eat.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup cornmeal
2 bananas (I went for the really brown ones)
3 - 3 1/2 cups flour (all purpose or whole wheat will do, whole wheat would be better for your pup)***
3 carrots (mine measured out to 1 1/3 cup)
1/2 cup cold water
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 egg
1/3 cup vegetable oil
*** I had to keep adding more flour to get the dough to the correct consistency, but I will get to that later
1.) Chop the carrot, hand shred, or use the food processor. Whatever it takes to get the job done.
2.) Mash the banana. Mine was so brown it was basically mashed right out of the peel.
3.) Add together all ingredients in a bowl and mix! This is a perfect job for a kitchenaid stand mixer with the dough hook attachment
4.) Mix, mix, mix until a ball forms. Here is where I added more flour, maybe my carrots were a bit too juicy, but it is fine if you have to add more flour!
5.) Roll out your dough on a work surface with flour to about 1/2 inch thickness
6.) Cut out out your dog treats! I used a bear... but only because I did not have a dog bone cutter but I plan on getting
soon
7.) Place them on a baking sheet, either greased or lined with parchment paper. I use parchment paper... because I hate cleaning up the mess.
8.) Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes, when done turn off the oven. Leave the treats in for 30-45 minutes until cool and crisp.
9.) Give a few to the impatiently waiting dog, and then seal the rest in the container of your choice.
She's usually great about holding a treat on her nose until we tell her she can flip it into her mouth... this time she just kept tilting her head back as if i would not notice... pshhh oh Mooch
