How to make a Lego table

I’m a big fan of open ended toys for Theo. Toys that encourage play and don’t make noise beyond Theo’s happy squeals are winners in my book. One of his current favorites are duplo blocks. So, for Theo’s 2nd birthday I made him a lego table. He’s been so into his duplo blocks, I hope it will be a toy he’ll continue to use for years to come. The great thing is the base plates work for both Duplo blocks and the regular Lego blocks, so we have lots of life left in this table. As an added bonus I wanted to make sure that Theo’s table had plenty of storage, because blocks everywhere do in fact drive me a little nutty. This was such an easy DIY project with minimal skill required. I wanted to share how I built Theo’s table, as well as a cost breakdown if you are interested in making one yourself.

Supplies:

How-To

Assemble the lack table, it’s as easy as twisting the legs into place. It is Ikea after all.

For the size of Ikea lack table I purchased I needed 6 of the base plates. I was telling a co-worker about Theo’s table and he was very excited, asking if I did different colors for different terrains… yea no. Maybe I missed an opportunity there. Since my base plates already had 3M foam adhesive on the back this was as simple as peeling and sticking.

So all in we spent $69 on his table. Theo loves playing with his table, and I’m excited with all the potential. I’m thinking we will have to build a maze for his cars to race through soon. Right now he’s still so into stacking blocks into the highest tower he can. If you are into DIY toys for your kids, check out the busy board we made for Theo last Christmas, he is still playing with it a year later!
